The short answer
For an integrative practice, the on-page and technical SEO that matters is the same work as building your ad landing pages, and it ships with them. You do not need to buy it twice.
There is a longer answer, because "SEO" is four different things wearing one name and only some of them are included.
Why this question is sharper for you
This is the thinnest market I have measured: about 150 monthly searches across the integrative keyword set in the market I modelled, against 1,296 for cat-only and 720 for urgent care.
That makes a retainer a poor fit and Quality Score a very good one. When the whole market is a few hundred searches a month, you cannot buy your way out of a bad landing page with more budget — there is no more traffic to buy. The only lever that still works is paying less for each of the clicks that do exist, and that lever is the page.
The second factor is your reader. They arrive screening for legitimacy, and modality-level pages with explained credentials are what answers that — again, a build decision.
What ships with your build
- Modality-level pages — acupuncture, herbal medicine, chiropractic, nutrition — because people search "veterinary acupuncture", not "holistic vet"
- Credentials marked up and placed near the top, with a plain sentence on what each involved
- Honest scope, including what each modality is not for
- Integrative framing throughout, never oppositional
- Per-session pricing published
- Speed, mobile rendering and Core Web Vitals — the builds measure 98 on PageSpeed with a 1.4-second Largest Contentful Paint
- Title tags, headings, internal linking, structured practice data, canonicals, a real sitemap, clean markup
What I don't do, and won't quietly imply I do
Ongoing content programmes or monthly blog production. Link building, paid or outreach. Google Business Profile management. Monthly SEO reporting or rank tracking as a deliverable. Citation and directory building.
I list these as plainly as the included column because "SEO included" is a phrase that can be stretched to imply a retainer's worth of work. It isn't one. It is the on-page and technical foundation, done properly, once. If you want an ongoing content and link programme, that is a real service and other people sell it.
Why it's one job
The work that makes an ad convert is the work that makes a page rank — I do it once, you get both, and agencies bill you twice for it.
Concretely, for you: the acupuncture page that lets a "veterinary acupuncture" ad land somewhere relevant is the page that ranks for the same term — and in a market this thin the organic result carries proportionally more weight, because there is not enough paid volume to run the practice on alone.
The receipt
One integrative practice in a Colorado market, PageSpeed Insights, May 2026 — their live site against a build of mine, same machine, same day:
| Live site | The build | |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile performance | 67 / 100 | 98 / 100 |
| Largest Contentful Paint | 8.0s | 1.4s |
| Modelled Quality Score | 5 | 9 |
| Modelled cost per click | $5.12 | $2.55 |
Per $1,000 of monthly budget: 195 clicks against 392.
Practices measured are prospects, not clients, and are never named.
What to do with an existing retainer
Ask for the last three months of deliverables and sort them into two piles: work that changed a page, and work that described a page. Then ask what the second pile costs you annually. Some retainers genuinely produce content and earn links, and if yours does I will tell you so. But the on-page and technical layer is finite work — it gets done, and then it is done.
What this all costs
| Line item | Elsewhere | Here |
|---|---|---|
| Website | $5,000–$10,000+ upfront, or inside $1,200–$5,000/mo bundles | free |
| On-page SEO | $800–$1,500/mo (2026 veterinary SEO benchmark, small-market band) | included |
| Hosting / care plan | commonly billed | $200/mo, from month two |
| Ads management | — | $750/mo flat |
Agencies charge for five line items. Three are free byproducts of doing the fourth right. The fifth is billing you twice for the third. I charge for the one that books new patients.
